Before welding, use angle grinders, torches, or sawing machines to cut, grind, bevel, and clean metal workpieces to get rid of rust, scale, and slag. Depending on the thickness of the material and the welding position, choose the proper electrodes, establish the proper welding currents, and modify the polarities. Before final welding, align and clamp components into fixtures while performing accurate tack welds to ensure dimensional tolerances. Examine completed welds visually for typical flaws including porosity, undercut, cracking, or lack of fusion. If found, grind out or re-weld the affected regions.
